Consciousness at its simplest is "sentience or awareness of internal or external existence". Despite centuries of analyses, definitions, explanations and debates by philosophers and scientists, consciousness remains puzzling and controversial, being "at once the most familiar and most mysterious aspect of our lives". Perhaps the only widely agreed notion about the topic is the intuition .   Arriving at the art forms which portray sentient, living nature, Schopenhauer places paintings and sculptures of non-human animals on equal footing. These fine arts also treat the human form and enable the perception of the Idea of humanity including the individuality of the sitter or subject, in the case of portraiture and sculpture.

Dance, the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to music and within a given space, for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself. Learn more about the history, styles, and aesthetics of dance in this article. Art was spirit in material form, the material of art a means to a spiritual end. Art was always inwardly fine, whatever profane form it took. Dürer understood this when he mourned the melting of many sacred works of Pre-Columbian fine art for their gold, a process he witnessed on his visit to the Emperor's court in what was then the Spanish.

G.W.F. Hegel’s aesthetics, or philosophy of art, forms part of the extraordinarily rich German aesthetic tradition that stretches from J.J. Winckelmann’s Thoughts on the Imitation of the Painting and Sculpture of the Greeks () and G.E. Lessing’s Laocoon () through Immanuel Kant’s Critique of the Power of Judgment () and Friedrich Schiller’s Letters on the Aesthetic.   Clever word play, political activism, subversion of advertising, and appropriation of form are just some common characteristics of powerful text art. Scroll down to learn a little more about the masters who pioneered this art movement. We look at 8 text artists who use words, letters, and numbers to give meaning to their art. Barbara Kruger.

"Stream-of-consciousness writing is usually regarded as a special form of interior monologue and is characterized by associative leaps in thought and lack of some or all punctuation." I could go on, on how this list upsets me, but well I save my rants for myself.

By Maria Popova “Art is a form of nourishment (of consciousness, the spirit),” year-old Susan Sontag wrote in her diary in “Art holds out the promise of inner wholeness,” wrote Alain de Botton half a century later in the excellent Art as Therapy.

The Art of Creativity When the creative spirit stirs, it animates a style of being: a lifetime filled with the desire to innovate, to explore new ways of doing things, to bring dreams of reality. It’s called Introducing Consciousness and it’s by the British philosopher David Papineau and Howard Selina.

It’s presumably trying to make a very complex topic accessible by presenting it using graphic art. Yes, it’s part of the Introducing series that presents various topics in graphic form, a bit like a comic book. What I liked.

Celebrating how Art changes Consciousness. Artist Alex Grey has opened Cosm in New York which is being called a Chapel of Sacred the Visionary Art Movement is the idea that creativity itself is a path to the divine. Philosophy of art - Philosophy of art - Art as expression: The view that “art is imitation (representation)” has not only been challenged, it has been moribund in at least some of the arts since the 19th century.

It was subsequently replaced by the theory that art is expression. Instead of reflecting states of the external world, art is held to reflect the inner state of the artist. The Art of Meditation Practicing the Presence The Infinite Way Consciousness Forms the Body—The Body Is Maintained by Con- The subject matter of this book is the unfolding of consciousness.

That means God revealing, God disclosing Itself to you—infinite, indivisible Consciousness revealing, unfolding, and. Aesthetic contemplation of a work of art provides just such a state—a temporary liberation from the suffering that results from enslavement to the will [need, craving, urge, striving] by becoming a will-less spectator of "the world as representation" [mental image or idea].

In his new book, “The Feeling of Life Itself,” Koch advocates for integrated information theory, or IIT, developed by Giulio Tononi, a neuroscientist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. IIT doesn’t ask how matter gives rise to consciousness — rather, it takes as a given certain attributes of consciousness, and asks what kinds of.

Some important historical figures have even held that consciousness entails some form of self-consciousness (Kant /, Sartre ), a view shared by some contemporary philosophers (Gennaro a, Kriegel ).

Some History on the Topic. Such primitive forms of self-consciousness are to be found in somatic proprioception, the structure of exteroceptive perception, and prelinguistic forms of social interaction. The author uses these primitive forms of self-consciousness to dissolve the paradox of self-consciousness and to show how the two questions can be given an affirmative.

What art gives us is consciousness in action—not consciousness of the world, but consciousness in the world. Helianthus Annuus, from Charles F.
