The book certainly does not explain away or excuse any of the horrors and atrocities that the SS were guilty of (nor does it attempt to), but it does provide a very detailed look at Himmler the child, Himmler the adolescent, Himmler the adult and the various things that happened to him and his family throughout his early years that shaped him /5(92).
A superb book covering by necessity not just the Himmler brothers but the broader family. The Nazis are all-too-frequently portrayed as warped monsters, almost as if from some alien planet light years away, but this book highlights well how perfectly ordinary family people, often well educated, can be sucked into twisted ideology brought about /5(56).

A nice one shot alternate history book. What did you love best about Himmler's War. Even though there were some plots Conroy could've gotten rid of to exspand on to other plots; the overall story made me want to listen to it even after getting to my next location.
